My Goddess Looks Down

21 01 2008

I went outside this evening, tired, preoccupied, not happy; and there She was, looking down serenely, not angry, not shaking her fist, just looking. I paused and admired her, greeted her; and went on with my evening’s work feeling immeasurably better.

Ave Luna, symbol of my Goddess! Thanks for watching out for me.

Isn’t it amazing when we take even the briefest moment to step into the sacred how beautiful the rest of life looks?

I agree Fox. It made yesterday brighter, and my outlook today has been much better as a result.

It’s those small things that can really make your life a better one. A couple of weeks back, I was walking towards the bus-stop where I take my bus to work. In Iceland during the winter, it’s very dark outside until almost 11, sometimes it stays dark until noon. So I’m out there in the early morning, the sky is pitch black, the stars are shining brightly and up in the sky is the most beautiful full moon I have ever seen.

I was tired, grumpy, irritable and so not ready to be going to work. I sit down in the freezing cold and feel the cold bench of the bus stop making my thighs and legs feel colder and colder. I get more grumpy and really don’t want to go, when I decide to turn the whole day around. I look up to the moon and impulsively sing a song. It was a sort of a prayer, not something I had written before, so I was just making it up on the spot. I asked the Goddess for her protection and blessing throughout the day and decided that it was going to be a good day with positive experiences. And it turned out to be an amazing day!

I have since then been trying all sorts of ways to keep my days positive and more giving, and it’s been an amazing experience. I get up 10 minutes earlier every day, light my special prayer candle, do some standing yoga stretches, breathe deep, bring my palms together in front of my chest in a meditative position, breathe, breathe, focus on the flickering flame of the candle, breathe, think of things that I am grateful for and smile, breathe. Then I blow the candle out and start with my regular morning routines and get to school. This very simple and easy little daily devotion has very much improved my life and my mood, which has been just great!

Small things, but so important. I like your efforts to turn negatives into positives, to make yourself feel happy. Its a real skill, but I imagine it becomes easier, more like second nature, if we practice!

Your waking routine is excellent. I hope you don’t mind if I borrow it!!

Not at all! Mine is an adaption of someone else’s, anyway 🙂
I do mine standing with my candle on a surface so that it’s just about at the height of my chest, so it’s not a strain for me to focus on the candle.

I tried it sitting down a couple of times, but I have problems with my back and this works much better for me, especially after I added the yoga stretches. The stretches really help with the meditative purpose of the routine, but they also help with waking up and stretching out a bit after a good night’s sleep!

And the candle I use is only lit when I am praying, meditating, doing a ritual, etc. It is not lit for aesthetic or cozy purposes, I have loads of those candles, but chose to keep this one sacred. It is really a good idea, because with time, just lighting that candle gets me in the state of mind that “something sacred is going to happen”. It works wonders!

Yoga, now. That’s a real aspiration of mine… I need to find a class. Thanks for the remind, Noctiluca! 🙂

I’ve also been looking for classes, they’re rather expensive here in Iceland.. I am definitely signing up for one soon, though, until then my do-it-at-home yoga videos are going to have to do the job 🙂

To get back on the yoga subject, check out my topic at WW. It’s in Health and Healing, under “Alexandra’s Health Topic”. I wrote down some basic yoga poses that can be put together to form a routine, easily done at home! 🙂
